Hawken launches in December as free-to-play title

Hawken, the multiplayer indie mech shooter that attracted significant internet buzz last year with its stunning announcement trailer, launches on 12th December as a free-to-play title.

As reported by VentureBeat, developer Adhesive Games hopes to pick up revenue from the sale of virtual goods such as additional weapons and armour.

Gameplay will be fast paced and session-based, with players opting for either 15 or 30 minute skirmishes.

Skyrim PC Creation Kit release date announced

The PC Creation Kit for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim arrives on Steam next Tuesday, developer Bethesda has announced.

A Tweet from marketing man Pete Hines earlier today read:

“For our Skyrim PC fans, the Creation Kit is on track for release on Tuesday. And, we also have a special surprise with it. #whatcoulditbe!?”

L.A. Noire sales near 5 million mark

Ambitious detective drama L.A. Noire has sold-in nearly five million copies since launch, publisher Take-Two has announced.

That makes it the best-selling new IP of 2011 in the US, according to NPD data.

The news comes out of Take-Two’s latest quarterly financial report, which also offered up life-to-date sales for a few other recent titles from the publisher.

Humble Indie Bundle heads to Android

The long-running Humble Indie Bundle initiative has finally made the leap to smartphones.

The latest pack includes Android-compatible indie gems Osmos, Edge and Anomaly: Warzone Earth. What’s more, you’ll also get versions for Mac OSX, Windows or GNU/Linux.

As is traditional, you decide how much you pay, and what proportion of your donation goes to the developers, to charity (choose Child’s Play Charity or the Electronic Frontier Foundation) and to the Humble Indie Bundle organisers.

Laptops with built-in Kinect sensors coming – report

PC manufacturer Asus is reportedly collaborating with Microsoft on a new laptop featuring a built-in Kinect sensor.

Following news earlier this month that Microsoft is readying a PC Kinect SKU, The Daily claims to have seen prototypes of Windows 8-enabled Asus netbooks sporting a number of small sensors lined up above the screen.

Its source at Microsoft allegedly confirmed that said laptops did indeed feature Kinect functionality built in.

The Binding of Isaac: Unholy Edition gets retail release

Acclaimed PC indie oddity The Binding of Isaac gets a full retail release in the UK on 16th March, courtesy of publisher Merge Games.

Dubbed the Unholy Edition, it includes a DRM-free version of the game, a free Steam gifting key, the game’s soundtrack, a (distinctly horrifying) poster and a 40 page “devzine”.

Why Tomb Raider won’t release on Wii U

Crystal Dynamics has explained why PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game Tomb Raider will not release on Wii U.

Global brand director Karl Stewart explained that development on the hotly-anticipated reboot began long before the announcement of the Wii U – and it wouldn’t be right to simply port the game to Nintendo’s tablet-fuelled Wii U successor.

“When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform,” Stewart told the Crystal Habit Podcast (via the Eidos forum.

Notch: Mojang isn’t really “indie” any more

Millionaire Markus “Notch” Persson doesn’t think the “indie” moniker best describes his studio Mojang any more.

As he explained to PC Gamer: “I don’t think [Mojang] are indie in the sense of how I used to work any more, because we have a payroll to worry about and we need to do stuff to ensure the company lasts.

“We have other stuff which influences what we do other than trying to focus on the games. We make sure me and Jakob [Porser] are only focusing on game development, so the founders are still developing.

Minecraft could be the first 360 game to see constant updates

The studio behind the Xbox Live Arcade port of PC phenomenon Minecraft believes it will be the first game on the system to see “constant updates”.

As it stands, the update process on the Xbox 360 is a laborious process, as Microsoft demands to approve every single patch before it goes live. Paddy Burns, chief technology officer at Minecraft XBLA developer 4J Studios, told Edge that that’s about to change.

“Microsoft knows that to do a similar thing that’s on PC where they constantly update it, that’s a very difficult thing to do on Xbox because you have to go through the full tests,” he explained.

BioWare details incoming SWTOR features

BioWare has showcased a handful of new features coming soon to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Speaking in a new video clip, which you can check out below, game director James Ohlen started out by confirming that the second part of update 1.1′s Rise of the Rakghouls story is currently in the works and can be expected soon.

There’s also a new PvP warzone in development, as well as a new feature that lets you rank yourself to track how you’re performing against other players.
