Why Tomb Raider won’t release on Wii U

Crystal Dynamics has explained why PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game Tomb Raider will not release on Wii U.

Global brand director Karl Stewart explained that development on the hotly-anticipated reboot began long before the announcement of the Wii U – and it wouldn’t be right to simply port the game to Nintendo’s tablet-fuelled Wii U successor.

“When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform,” Stewart told the Crystal Habit Podcast (via the Eidos forum.

Notch: Mojang isn’t really “indie” any more

Millionaire Markus “Notch” Persson doesn’t think the “indie” moniker best describes his studio Mojang any more.

As he explained to PC Gamer: “I don’t think [Mojang] are indie in the sense of how I used to work any more, because we have a payroll to worry about and we need to do stuff to ensure the company lasts.

“We have other stuff which influences what we do other than trying to focus on the games. We make sure me and Jakob [Porser] are only focusing on game development, so the founders are still developing.

Minecraft could be the first 360 game to see constant updates

The studio behind the Xbox Live Arcade port of PC phenomenon Minecraft believes it will be the first game on the system to see “constant updates”.

As it stands, the update process on the Xbox 360 is a laborious process, as Microsoft demands to approve every single patch before it goes live. Paddy Burns, chief technology officer at Minecraft XBLA developer 4J Studios, told Edge that that’s about to change.

“Microsoft knows that to do a similar thing that’s on PC where they constantly update it, that’s a very difficult thing to do on Xbox because you have to go through the full tests,” he explained.

BioWare details incoming SWTOR features

BioWare has showcased a handful of new features coming soon to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Speaking in a new video clip, which you can check out below, game director James Ohlen started out by confirming that the second part of update 1.1′s Rise of the Rakghouls story is currently in the works and can be expected soon.

There’s also a new PvP warzone in development, as well as a new feature that lets you rank yourself to track how you’re performing against other players.

Valor exploit in SWTOR update 1.1 causes player uproar

Today’s 1.1 update for Star Wars: The Old Republic has seemingly brought with it a number of serious glitches and exploits.

Players have flocked to a 74-page-long thread on the game’s official forum to complain about various problems thrown up by the patch.

The most serious allegation is that many users are racking up huge amounts of valor points in Ilum PvP via turret farming and spawn camping exploits caused by factional imbalances.

Minecraft hits 20 million users, 4.66 million sales

More than 20 million people have registered for block-based sandbox PC phenomenon Minecraft, creator Markus “Notch” Persson has announced.

Of the 20,121,024 Minecraft users (and counting), 4,667,176 people (at the time of writing) have bought the game.

Free users are limited to the outdated Minecraft Classic build. But those who pay get the game’s survival mode, and can hunt animals and pick apples from trees.

Rift subscription prices lowered

Trion Worlds has cut subscription prices on its MMO Rift for a limited time.

As seen on the game’s official site (thanks VideoGamer), an annual subscription now costs £59 (£4.92 per month), a six month sub will set you back £38.94 (£6.49 a month) or you can get three months for £23.97 (£7.99 a month).

An annual sub previously cost £71.88, a six month sub £41.94 and a three month sub £23.97.

Modern Warfare 3, Xbox 360 top US 2011 charts

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was the best-selling game in the USA during 2011, according to sales tracker The NPD Group.

Just Dance 3 came in second, followed by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Battlefield 3 and Madden NFL 12.

Govt to axe boring school ICT courses from September

Schools in England are to scrap their boring snoring ICT courses from September, the government will announce later today.

Created in their place will be “more rigorous” and compulsory 21st century teachings in computer science.

BioWare responds to SWTOR performance issues

BioWare has responded to fans who have vented their frustration with the game’s performance on the official Star Wars: The Old Republic forum.

A series of lengthy threads attested to performance issues that caused framerates to plummet when players entered interior locations.

“Our development team and our production team have been investigating this issue and we want to thank everyone who has posted constructively on this thread,” the BioWare post, written by community representative “Arrthen”, began.
